Helping residents to move into their own homes through Shared Ownership

We’ve been finding new ways to provide more affordable homes for residents. One approach has been for Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT) to buy homes directly from the companies who are building them.

In April 2023 we purchased a total of 17 two or three bedroom homes in Garforth near Leeds which are ideal for families and first time buyers.

10 of these homes were offered to residents on a shared ownership basis and all of these homes are now either occupied or reserved.

We have more homes available for Shared Ownership in other locations including Northallerton and Beverley.

What is Shared Ownership?

Shared ownership is the home buying scheme in which you buy shares of a home and pay rent on the rest. Buying shares of the home means that the deposit required is more affordable than buying the home outright.

You can buy further shares of your home later and eventually staircase to own 100% of your home.

A resident commented: “Moving into our new home has made a big difference for our family. We're now closer to family, schools, and work. This has positively impacted our lives in the best way. I'm very thankful to the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust for helping me and my family.”

Benefits

  • A smaller deposit is needed
  • It is easier for low-income earners to get a mortgage
  • You can gradually buy more shares in your home – eventually you can fully own your home
  • It offers more security than renting – as long as you continue to pay your mortgage and rent. You can usually stay in your home for the full length of your leasehold.
