Have you ever received an unexpected visit or phone call from someone claiming to be from a reputable company or organisation? It's important to be aware of the risk of bogus callers who may try to trick you into letting them into your home or sharing personal information.

Here are some common scams to watch out for:

  • Unexpected visits or calls: Be cautious of anyone claiming to need to inspect your home for repairs or maintenance.
  • Urgent claims: Watch out for those who create a sense of urgency, claiming that there's a serious problem that needs immediate attention.
  • "Free" offers: Be sceptical of anyone offering "free" upgrades or improvements to your home, often asking for upfront payments.
  • Phishing attempts: Be aware of attempts to obtain your personal information, such as bank details or passwords, over the phone or through emails.

How to protect yourself:

  • Verify the identity of any caller or visitor: Call your housing association directly using a number you know is correct.
  • Be cautious of unexpected requests: Never let anyone into your home unless you are sure who they are and why they are there.
  • Don't share personal information: Do not share personal or financial information with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
  • Be wary of pressure tactics: Be cautious of anyone who creates a sense of urgency or pressure.
  • Use security features: Consider installing a door viewer or peephole to see who is at your door before opening it.

If you suspect that you have been approached by a bogus caller, please report it immediately to:

  • Police: If you feel threatened or have been a victim of a crime, contact the police on 999 or 101.
  • Trading Standards: They deal with consumer issues and can investigate scams. You can find your local Trading Standards office through your local council's website or by using the government's online directory: https://www.gov.uk/find-local-trading-standards-office
  • Action Fraud: This is the UK's national fraud reporting centre. You can report scams online at https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/.

By being aware of these scams and by taking precautions, you can help protect yourself and your neighbours from becoming victims of bogus callers.
