This year marks a century since the passing of Joseph Rowntree (1836–1925), the York-based confectionery businessman, social reformer, and philanthropist whose ideas continue to shape society today.
To honour this milestone, the Joseph Rowntree Centenary is celebrating his extraordinary life and lasting impact, particularly in York. A series of events throughout the year will explore his contributions to housing, social justice, and community development.
Joseph Rowntree’s Lasting Influence
Affordable Housing – Over 110 years ago, Rowntree’s commitment to social reform led to the creation of the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT), which continues to provide high-quality, affordable homes today.
Tackling Social Inequality – He founded the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) to investigate and address the root causes of poverty, a mission that still influences policy and research.
