Discovering Space

During the May half term, families from across York joined in the space themed family fun at the Folk Hall.

The hall was transformed into out of space! Families stepped into the Cosmodome to explore the wonders of space, searched for aliens and wore Virtual Reality headsets to imagine what it is like to be an astronaut.

Families created shooting stars and glow in the dark constellations of stars.
Younger children enjoyed curling up in the den to watch the wonderful array of multi-coloured starry lights. After the activity, families enjoyed a light lunch.

Viv Fleming & Amy Bates, Community Development Officers said, “Offering these sessions is such an important and valuable part of our role.  It’s wonderful to build relationships with both familiar faces and meet new families each time.  Bringing people together for a shared meal is a great way to connect with the community.”

We received some great feedback:

“My children loved the space activities!  It really helps me that the children are provided with free lunch and tea.  I have 4 children and times can be difficult so it’s greatly appreciated! We cannot wait for the next one! It also takes the weight off knowing that there is a close by, no cost, activity to entertain the children in the holidays.  Thank you.”

“This was a really well organised, fun and educational event, which my kids enjoyed a lot.   These events are a great way to keep the kids occupied in the holidays without having to spend lots of money!  Fantastic! Thanks very much.”

“Excellent event!  Very interactive and interesting.  Food was amazing too, my autistic son loved everything.”

School holidays are a time for children to relax, have fun, and explore new experiences. It can also be a challenging time for families – trying to find affordable exciting and fun activities for everyone to enjoy.

Every school holiday, colleagues from the communities team in York run fun packed activity sessions for families. The sessions include a fun activity and packed lunch on the day as well as an activity and hot meal to take home.
