As the year comes to an end, Connor Lambert, Digital Inclusion and Information Accessibility Officer reflects on an incredible journey of helping residents overcome digital barriers. From providing essential tools and skills to fostering confidence in navigating the online world, Connor’s work has opened doors for countless residents to connect with loved ones, access vital services, and explore new opportunities.

A favourite memory

When asked about his favourite moment of the year, Connor shares a story that embodies the impact of digital inclusion.

Natasha, a resident living in a JRHT-managed home, recently reached out to us after learning about the laptop scheme on social media. She was eager to support her children's educational journey and applied for a device to help them on their learning journey.

When the laptop arrived, the children were so excited. Natasha’s children couldn’t wait to explore their new device and were fully of curiosity, asking countless questions about how to use it and what they could achieve with it.

Noah, the eldest, was especially enthusiastic. He’s already excelling academically at school achieving an incredible 180 + sums in just 60 seconds on the online maths platform Times Tables Rock Stars. Now, with access to a laptop, he’s thrilled about the new possibilities it offers to further his learning beyond the classroom.

For children like Natasha’s, having access to a laptop can make a world of difference. It ensures they stay on par with their peers, developing vital digital skills, and opening doors to new opportunities for growth and success in school and beyond.

What we have achieved together in 2024

This year, JRHT expanded its digital inclusion program to support over 260 residents through initiatives like digital cafes, skill-building sessions, and one-on-one support. Here’s a snapshot of the impact:

  • Digital Access: Distributed 29 refurbished devices and 16 free SIM cards, ensuring residents could access online services.

  • Skill Development: Held 35 drop-in sessions, 14 digital skills workshops, and 12 digital cafes to help residents navigate technology confidently.

Stories like Natasha’s highlight how access to technology changes lives. Other residents have used these tools to manage finances, access healthcare, and explore hobbies they never thought possible.

We have also launched new services such as:

  • Tech and Tea: Informal gatherings to learn about technology in a relaxed setting.

  • Coding Club: A space for young people to explore coding and develop future-ready skills.

  • Accessibility Support: Personalised advice and tools to make devices more user-friendly.

  • Online Learning Platforms: Resources like Learn My Way and Barclays Digital Wings to enhance digital literacy.

Looking ahead to 2025

As we move into 2025, the programme of support is set to expand further, building on the strong foundation we have established over the past year.

Connor’s vision for 2025 is to ensure no resident feels left behind in the digital world. He said “Technology should empower not intimidate. I’m excited to bring even more opportunities to communities in the coming year.”

This journey wouldn’t have been possible without the enthusiasm and resilience of the residents themselves. Their determination to embrace change and learn new skills has been inspiring.

As Connor reflects, "Every success story belongs to the residents who took the leap into the digital world. It’s been an honour to walk this path with them. Thank you"
